The mandali strive to remain calm in confrontation

The Combined Diary

"Behramji is quite the duplicate of Afzool Khan in build and features and in the same way the constitutions of all the present members of Baba's circle are exactly as they were during Shivaji's time,"
folios #2v030-2v034, November 28-29, 1926.

After breakfast a group of young relatives of the owner of the bungalow arrived at the gate and demanded entry. Apparently they were unaware that the owner had given Baba and his party permission to occupy it. Peshotan, the gate keeper, prevented them from entering. The confrontation escalated to hot words on both sides and the group forced its way into the compound. The mandali closed ranks and formed a barricade to their further progress. In exasperation the visitors abused the mandali with many "shameful words."

Remembering Baba's orders against violence and outnumbering the visitors four to one, the mandali strived to remain calm. The visitors rushed them in a hail of abusive language. Ramjoo lunged for the throat of their leader but was restrained by fellow mandali. Without further violence the visitors were "hustled" out of the compound.

The moment they were gone, Baba appeared from the room where he had been observing the interaction. He immediately ordered all to play marbles; despite anger and upset, the mandali engaged in marble play with Baba. After a while when the tension had subsided, he stopped the game and called everyone together to discuss the incident.

The discussion ended with a statement by Baba: "If you all who are in my constant contact and have heard so many lectures from me, still lose your temper and become angry when provoked, what is the fault of others and especially worldly people when they do so? They are ignorant. Let us forgive them, brothers, for they know not what they do! In spite of all their abuses and rashness they will be benefitted by coming in my boundary all the same!"

In the morning Baba and a party of mandali visited Ramjoo's and Dr. Ghani's mill by car. On the return trip the forts of Lohagadh and Visapur were spotted near the village of Karla. Baba indicated that they were part of Shivaji's "play ground" during his military campaigns. He explained that when a person reincarnates he normally takes a body quite different from his previous one. An exception occurs when a person approaches Perfection, in which case he incarnates in a body that exactly resembles his body at the time several hundred years previously when he was taken into the Circle.

"Accordingly, Shivaji and members were formed into a circle by Tukaram and Ramdas in the lifetime of Shivaji. This — the present — is the period of their reaching Perfection. Shivaji has already become perfect in the shape of Meherbaba and so Meherbaba and Shivaji are exactly alike in features and build! Similarly Behramji is quite the duplicate of Afzool Khan in build and features and in the same way the constitutions of all the present members of Baba's circle are exactly as they were during Shivaji's time."

In the afternoon the singer Sadashive sang divine songs to Baba and the mandali. A letter of apology arrived from the owner of the bungalow expressing regret for the behavior of his relatives and extending permission to Baba to stay as long as he liked. After another "spell-binding" lecture from Baba through signs and writing, all retired for the night.
